Web Site Pointing, URL Redirection, and IP Address Pointing

You can point your domain to any other web site or IP address on the internet. This can be quite useful if you already have a web site or are creating a web site.

Here are three powerful options for Web Site Pointing and Redirection:

URL Redirection - Your domain is pointed to a specific web site on the Internet and the destination web site address appears in the browser's address field.

URL Frame - Your domain is pointed to a specific web site on the Internet and your domain name appears in the browser's address field. This increases perception of your domain name and helps brand your site.

IP Address Pointing - Your domain is pointed to a specific IP Address that you have been given by a hosting company.

Please Note: Your domain must use our name servers to take advantage of the free web site URL Redirection and IP Address Pointing. You can choose to use outside name servers for your domain if you would like to, but then you would lose control of the domain pointing and email forwarding features.

How to Set Up Web Site Pointing and IP Address Pointing

Put the following text in the domain control panel for this section. For each column, type or select what is in quotation marks:

The above record ensures that web surfers will be able to access your web site when they type in your domain either with or without the "www" before yourname.com.

The above record redirects your domain name to another page on the web. URL Redirect keeps the web page address in the browser's address field; URL Frame keeps your domain name in the browser's address field. This is your choice.

Please note that when you change name servers it can take 12-36 hours for the change to propogate across the Internet and become active. The changes described above that you make in the "Hosts" section can be pre-configured so that they will take place as soon as the name server information has been updated in the whois database.

Future changes or updates to web site redirection and/or email forwarding with no changes in the name servers may take only 1-4 hours, or even as little as 5-10 minutes, to update, because the information remains on our name servers.

IP Address Pointing

Another option instead of "URL Redirect" or "URL Frame" is to select "A (Address)" for the Record Type. This is used only when you want to point your domain name direction to a specific IP Address. If you use this option, then type the exact numerical IP Address in the Address column.
